The road in from Santa Margherita is the real hazard: single-lane in places, cut into the cliff, and shared with buses, scooters and coaches. Most visitors are better served by the ferry, which is also the pleasanter approach.
Hiking to San Fruttuoso or Base Zero is genuinely demanding — steep, exposed, hot in summer, and with sections that close after heavy rain. Ligurian storms can arrive fast in late summer; check the trail status and carry water.
