UK advice for Japan says to take the same precautions you would at home and to get local advice on areas where you may need to be more alert. The US State Department rates Japan Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions. Nothing in the advice we read is specific to Okinawa.

It says the typhoon season runs between June and December, peaking between July and September. UK advice says driving in Japan is on the left, that roads are well maintained, that you need the 1949 version of the international driving permit plus your licence and insurance documents (UK advice, for UK licence holders; check your own country's rules), and that drink-driving is a serious offence with a legal limit about a third of the UK limit. A passenger could face arrest if police suspect they knew the driver had been drinking.
