The islands share mainland Japan's low crime rates with a slower, more rural character. Visitors rarely encounter anything worse than a language gap outside Naha. Drink-driving enforcement is strict and worth noting, because a hire car is essential here and evening restaurants usually mean a designated driver or a taxi.
The ocean deserves respect. Habu jellyfish appear from roughly May to October and resort beaches net their swimming areas for that reason — swim inside the nets. Stonefish and cone shells sit on the reef, so reef shoes and a no-touching rule handle both. Currents run hard through the channels between islands; snorkel from supervised beaches or with a boat operator rather than swimming out from an empty shore.
