October is the year's most underrated month: the Mediterranean's warm tail, Marrakech back in season, the Caribbean quiet before its reopening — and shoulder rates almost everywhere.

The long warm tail

October keeps more of summer than the calendar suggests. The southern Mediterranean — Puglia, the Greek islands, the Balearics — holds daytime temperatures in the mid-twenties and a sea still warm from September, while the crowds have thinned to the point of disappearance. Marrakech comes back into its own as the heat releases its grip.

It is a gambler's month in one respect: the weather is usually glorious and occasionally dramatic, and the odds shorten as the month goes on. Take the first three weeks, stay south, and October delivers a kind of private version of the summer at two-thirds of the price.

How to choose between them

  • For Europe's last swim

Puglia and the southern Cyclades hold a swimmable sea through mid-October — with the beaches, towns and restaurants to yourself.

  • For guaranteed warmth

Marrakech in October is the safest bet in the northern hemisphere: dry, bright, 28°C, and back at the top of its game.

  • For the Caribbean before the season

Barbados in October is the connoisseur's gamble — the quietest month of the year, a warm sea, and a small chance of rain in exchange for the lowest rates.

  • For a city-and-sun combination

Dubai's season opens in October as the summer heat breaks — the beach clubs return and the terrace restaurants fill again.

The booking calendar

October is the late booker's friend: two to four weeks out is often enough outside half-term. The autumn half-term week in late October behaves like a minor peak for family houses — book that one by summer. Caribbean October stays open latest of all, priced to reflect its weather risk.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to travel in October for sun?
Marrakech is the safest warm-weather bet, with the southern Mediterranean (Puglia, the Cyclades, Crete) holding a swimmable sea through mid-month. Dubai's season begins, and Barbados offers the Caribbean at its quietest.
Can you still swim in the Mediterranean in October?
Yes, in the south — the sea holds 22–24°C through mid-October in Puglia, the Greek islands and the Balearics. Go in the first three weeks for the best odds.
Is October a risky month for the Caribbean?
It sits at the tail of hurricane season, which is exactly why it is the cheapest month. Statistically the risk is real but modest; the trade-off is the quietest, best-value Caribbean month of the year. Flexible cancellation terms are the sensible hedge.
Is October good value?
Among the best — shoulder rates nearly everywhere, with weather that in the south of Europe is often indistinguishable from September's. The late-October half-term week is the exception.
