The South Fork villages — East Hampton, Southampton, Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor, Montauk — are affluent, small and quiet, with visible police presence through the summer. Crime against visitors is rare; the concerns residents actually discuss are traffic, parking and beach permits.
The Atlantic beaches are beautiful and genuinely powerful. Rip currents are the leading cause of ocean rescues here, and the ocean beaches are only lifeguarded during set hours in season. Swim in front of a guard, and if you are pulled out, swim parallel to shore until you are clear before turning in.
Driving is the real summer hazard. Montauk Highway backs up for miles on Friday and Sunday, cyclists share narrow shoulders, and drink-driving enforcement is heavy after dinner service.
