The resort is compact, well lit, and policed hard in the French school holidays and the festive fortnight. Walking between chalets and restaurants at night is routine, and the chalet-and-driver model means most visitors barely use the roads themselves.
The exception worth naming: in the busiest weeks, the concentration of watches, jewellery and unattended skis attracts professional opportunists. Use the chalet safe, lock skis, and do not leave bags in parked cars at the ski-area car parks.
On the mountain, the Trois Vallées is vast and easy to over-reach late in the day. Note the last lift times back from Val Thorens and Méribel, ski with a guide off-piste, and treat the Grand Couloir with the respect its reputation implies. The road up from Moûtiers requires winter tyres or chains.

- Is it safe to travel to Courchevel 1850?
- Generally, yes. It is a modern, secure resort with a strong seasonal police presence. Ordinary alpine precautions and care with valuables in the peak weeks are enough.
- Is theft a problem in Courchevel?
- Petty and occasionally professional theft rises in the busiest weeks, targeting jewellery, watches and equipment rather than people. Use the safe, lock skis, and leave nothing visible in a car.
- Is it easy to get stranded in the Trois Vallées?
- Yes if you ignore lift times. The linked area is enormous; check the last lift home from the far valleys and turn back early in poor visibility.
- Do I need chains to drive to Courchevel?
- Winter tyres are required on the mountain roads in season and chains should be carried. A pre-booked transfer from Geneva, Lyon or Chambéry is the simpler choice.
- Is Courchevel safe for children?
- Very. The resort is compact, ski schools are excellent and the nursery slopes sit in the centre of the village, within sight of most chalets.
