Bangkok is a huge, busy, welcoming city where violent crime against tourists is rare and the main losses are financial. The scams are well known and easy to sidestep: tuk-tuk drivers offering a cheap tour that ends at a gem or tailor shop, someone announcing a temple is 'closed today' and proposing an alternative, and taxi meters that are suddenly broken. Use a ride app or insist on the meter, and walk away from any unsolicited offer near the Grand Palace.
Roads are the genuine hazard. Thailand's road fatality rate is among the world's highest and motorbike taxis are the biggest single contributor. Use the Skytrain, metro and river boats wherever possible, refuse a motorbike taxi without a helmet, and be sceptical of scooter hire unless you have a licence and real experience.
Two seasonal points are worth planning around. Air quality dips between December and March, when haze can reach unhealthy levels for several days at a time — check an air-quality app and keep indoor days in reserve. And the heat in April is extreme, above 35C most afternoons, which matters more than it sounds for full days of sightseeing. Street food is generally safe at busy stalls where the turnover is high; bottled or filtered water is the norm.
