The wind decides
The Indian Ocean's calendar is written by two monsoons. In the Maldives the north-east monsoon from December to April brings dry air, flat lagoons and the clearest water of the year; the south-west monsoon from May to November brings warmth, shorter squalls and rates that fall by a third or more. Neither is bad; they are different holidays at different prices.
The Seychelles sit between the same two winds and are at their best in the turning months — April to May and October to November — when the sea is calm and the seaweed that the trade winds push ashore is absent. Mauritius, further south, runs a near-opposite calendar: its finest months are the southern winter, May to December.

Choosing between them
The Maldives is the most single-minded holiday in luxury travel: one island, one resort, water in every direction, and nothing to do that you have not chosen. It suits honeymoons, families who want the sea, and divers, and its top villas set the regional price ceiling.
The Seychelles offer the opposite — granite islands with mountains, forests and beaches you can walk between, plus the region's most exclusive private-island houses. Mauritius is the practical one: a real country with golf, food, culture and resort estates at rates well below the Maldivian equivalent.
The booking calendar
The festive fortnight in the Maldives is the single most expensive week-for-week product the region sells, and it is committed twelve months ahead with minimum stays of seven to ten nights. January to April books six to nine months out. From May to November the same villas are frequently available six weeks ahead at 30 to 50 per cent less, which is the best value in the Indian Ocean if you accept an afternoon squall.
