Two monsoons, one very short high season
The iruvai, or northeast monsoon, runs December to April: dry, sunny, light winds and the clearest water. The hulhangu, or southwest monsoon, runs May to November: humid, with squalls that pass in an hour and skies that clear as quickly.
Noonu sits in the northern chain, roughly 45 minutes by seaplane from Malé. It catches the dry monsoon a little earlier and holds it a little longer than the southern atolls, which is why late April here often behaves like March elsewhere in the country.

The transfer decides the day
Seaplanes to the northern atolls fly in daylight only. An international arrival after about 15:00 Malé time means an overnight in the capital or a domestic flight plus speedboat, and the resort will tell you which only once flights are ticketed. Book the long-haul leg to land in the morning and the whole trip shortens by a day.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best month to visit the Maldives?
- February for weather alone — driest, clearest and calmest. For value with near-identical conditions, late April or October, when rates fall sharply but the dry monsoon still holds for much of the day.
- Is the Maldives worth visiting in the rainy season?
- Yes, if marine life matters more than a guaranteed blue sky. May to November brings manta rays and whale sharks, rates fall by half, and rain usually arrives as short squalls rather than all-day weather.
- When is the Maldives cheapest?
- May, June and September. Overwater villas that cost USD 3,000 a night at the February peak commonly sit between USD 1,200 and 1,800 in those months.
- How far is Noonu Atoll from Malé?
- About 45 minutes by seaplane, or a domestic flight to Maafaru followed by a short speedboat. Seaplanes operate in daylight hours only, so an evening arrival into Malé usually means an overnight in the capital.
