One calendar, many islands

The Caribbean runs the clearest calendar in luxury travel. High season begins around the middle of December and ends after Easter; the festive fortnight sits on top of it as a separate market with its own rates and its own year-ahead booking rhythm. From May the rates fall sharply, the weather stays good into July, and the risk window — August to October — is when most of the best houses and hotels simply close.

What varies is not the season but the island. These are not interchangeable places: St Barths is French and social, Mustique is private and communal, Barbados is a proper country with a west coast, Canouan and Harbour Island are small worlds of their own.

Choosing an island

If you want to be seen and to move — lunches, boats, a beach club at the end of the day — St Barths remains unmatched, and its villa stock is the deepest in the region. If you want the opposite, Mustique is the answer: a privately managed island of houses, no day visitors, and a house-to-house social life that regulars keep for decades.

Barbados offers something neither can: a functioning country with a polished west coast, good flights and rates that start meaningfully lower. Canouan suits travellers who want quiet and modern infrastructure together, and Harbour Island is for people who like small places with strong taste.

The hurricane question, answered plainly

The official Atlantic season runs from 1 June to 30 November, but the risk is heavily concentrated in August, September and early October. June and July are usually fine and priced as if they are not. The prudent approach is simple: travel May to July or November to April, buy proper cancellation cover if you travel in the risk window, and check each property's own closure dates, since many of the best houses shut entirely from late August.

The booking calendar

  • Festive fortnight

Christmas and New Year are committed twelve months ahead on every island that matters, at rates quoted separately from the high-season card. Assume a minimum stay of seven to fourteen nights.

  • January to April

Book six to nine months out for the best houses. February and the spring-break weeks in March go first.

  • May to July

Six to eight weeks is enough, and the saving against February is frequently 40 to 60 per cent in the same house.

  • November

The quiet bargain of the year: dry-season weather arriving, pre-festive rates, and thin crowds.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit the Caribbean?
Mid-December to mid-April for the most reliable weather, and May to early July for the best value with conditions still good. August to October is the peak hurricane window, when many of the finest houses close.
Which Caribbean island is best for a luxury villa?
St Barths for depth of villa stock and social life, Mustique for complete privacy, Barbados for the west coast at a lower entry rate, Canouan for quiet modern comfort, and Harbour Island for small-scale style.
How much does a luxury Caribbean villa cost per night?
Roughly USD 800 a night in low season to USD 15,000 for a prime St Barths or Mustique house in high season. The festive fortnight is quoted separately and sits well above the high-season card.
Is it safe to travel to the Caribbean during hurricane season?
June, July and November carry low practical risk and good value. August to early October is the concentrated window — travel then only with flexible cancellation terms and confirmation that your house and its staff are operating.
