Milan through the year

Milan is a working city, and its calendar is a business calendar. Salone del Mobile in April and the two fashion weeks in late February and late September are the weeks when the whole city is booked, priced accordingly and at its most alive.

Everything else is easier than its reputation. Spring and early autumn give you warm streets, open courtyards and lakes ninety minutes away; August is a shuttered, quiet and cheap city that a certain kind of traveller loves.

The booking calendar

Demand in Milan is driven less by weather than by a handful of fixed weeks. Book against those first and the rest of the year is forgiving.

  • Salone del Mobile (April): nine to twelve months. Apartments are taken a year out and rates triple.
  • Fashion weeks (late February, late September): six to nine months.
  • May, June and October: three to four months for a good address.
  • August and mid-November: two to four weeks, at the year's softest rates.

Frequently asked questions

When is the cheapest time to visit Milan?
August and mid-November. Both sit outside the trade calendar, and a central apartment can be half its April rate.
Is Milan worth visiting in August?
If you want quiet, yes. Expect many restaurants and family shops shut for two to three weeks around Ferragosto on 15 August, hot still air, and an almost private Duomo in the early mornings.
What is the busiest week in Milan?
Salone del Mobile in April, the world's largest design fair. The city is full, the parties are the point, and accommodation is booked out a year ahead.
How many days do you need in Milan?
Three is right for the city itself, four or five if you add Lake Como or Lake Maggiore, both about an hour and a half by car.
