What a Cap Ferret villa costs
Cap Ferret is a pine-covered spit between the Bassin d'Arcachon and the Atlantic, and it has resisted almost everything that happened to the rest of the French coast: no hotels of scale, no seafront apartment blocks, no marina. The rental market matches — a small number of timber villas among the pines, most of them family houses let for a handful of weeks a year, and very little of it listed publicly.

Villages of the peninsula
The peninsula is fifteen kilometres of pine and sand with the bassin on one side and the ocean on the other. Each village along the bassin has its own character, and the ocean side is a different holiday altogether.
L'Herbe and the villages ostréicoles
The oyster villages: single-storey wooden cabins, no cars, tables on the water at lunchtime. The most photographed and the most protected stretch of the bassin.
Le Canon and Piraillan
Quieter bassin-side villages with the peninsula's best family houses set back among the pines, a short walk from a jetty and a market.
Cap Ferret village and the Phare
The centre of what activity there is: the lighthouse, the Saturday market, the restaurants and the Bélisaire jetty for the Arcachon boat.
The ocean side — Plage du Truc Vert
Atlantic surf, dunes and forest, five minutes across the spit. Larger plots, more privacy and the right side for a surfing week.

How the peninsula is actually booked
There is no meaningful open market for Cap Ferret in August. Houses are re-let to the same families, released through a handful of local agents, or placed by introduction — which is why comparison sites show almost nothing worth having. Enquiries for August are placed nine to twelve months ahead; June and September can be arranged inside a month.
Staffing is minimal and discreet: a housekeeper, a caretaker for the boat and the bikes, and a chef brought in for particular evenings rather than the week. Most guests eat oysters at the producer's table at noon and cook at home at night.
- Ask whether the house comes with a mooring, a boat or bicycles — all three matter here.
- Confirm the walk to the bassin; pine plots can be further from the water than photographs suggest.
- Check the tide table before planning swimming on the bassin side.
- Book the Bordeaux transfer; there is no useful rail link to the peninsula.
- For August, enquire a year ahead and accept a Saturday-to-Saturday week.
