The short version

There is no bad month in the Indian Ocean, only a wrong island for the month. The Maldives is driest and calmest from December to April. Mauritius is at its best from May to December, when the Maldives is wetter. The Seychelles sits between two monsoons and is best in the changeover months — April, May, October and November. Sri Lanka effectively has two coasts with opposite seasons: the south and west from December to March, the east from May to September.

Booking windows that actually matter

  • Christmas and New Year in the Maldives or the Seychelles: book by June; the best water villas and private islands go a year ahead.
  • February and March in the Maldives: six months, with minimum-stay rules over the peak.
  • July and August in the Maldives: the value window, often bookable eight weeks out.
  • Seaplane transfers stop at dusk in the Maldives — arrive before mid-afternoon or plan an overnight in Malé.
  • Diving and manta trips follow the monsoon from one side of an atoll to the other; ask the dive centre before choosing a resort for a specific season.

The south-west monsoon runs roughly May to November, bringing wetter, breezier spells rather than continuous rain. December to April is the dry season, with the calmest seas and best visibility.

Editorial note & limitations

Rate character describes how prices behave in a month relative to the rest of the year, not a quotation. Houses in the Collection are priced live by the partner holding those dates; hotels and rentals are searched live through our booking partners. Weather and season dates are drawn from official climate and park sources, assembled September 2026.
