August is the Mediterranean's great shutdown: everyone is on holiday, which is both the charm and the problem. Where the crowds are the point, where to escape them, and the case for going north.
The month everyone takes
August in the Mediterranean is not a travel decision so much as a cultural fact: the coasts fill, the cities empty, and the whole apparatus of the European summer operates at capacity. There is genuine magic in it — every restaurant open, every harbour full, the season's energy at its height — and genuine congestion to match.
The strategic choices are three. Join it knowingly, in a destination whose August is the point. Sidestep it geographically, into the coves and islands where the crowds cannot physically fit. Or refuse it entirely and go north, where August is the finest month of the year and nobody seems to have noticed.

For the northern alternative
The Alps in August offer the season's most civilised escape: warm days, cool nights, lake swimming, and grand hotels at a fraction of winter rates.

August is the hardest month to book late: the prime houses are committed by winter, and what remains in June is what remains for a reason.
