The short answer
January is Thailand's finest month — cool, dry, low humidity — and the country prices accordingly. It is also the peak of Japan's powder season, with Niseko and Hakuba at their driest snow and their highest rates of the year.
Indonesia is the other story. Bali sits in the wet season with warm, heavy afternoon rain; it is green, cheap and quiet, but it is not the month to promise anyone flawless beach weather.

Thailand
The best weather of the year in Bangkok and on both coasts. Book early: everybody knows it.
Japan
Powder in the north, empty temples in Kyoto after the New Year week.
Bali
Wet season. Best for spa, villa time and value rather than beaches.
- Thai high-season villas and Japanese ski chalets both need nine to twelve months.
- Skip the first four days in Japan — New Year closes restaurants and fills shrines.
- Maldives rates peak through January; February is marginally softer.
- Bali is the value play, not the weather play.
