Sea air and cypress shade on the Ligurian coast — a small, slow harbour best used in the shoulder months. The month you choose decides most of the stay here — whether the spas are open at all, whether a therapist is bookable tomorrow or in three weeks, and what a villa costs. This is the twelve-month view, with a built-in itinerary builder and live partner rates below.
Retreat programmes, spa and bathing conditions, therapist availability and villa rate character for each month of the year.
| Month | Retreats & programmes | Spa & bathing | Therapist availability | Villa rates |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | Out of season. Most hotels and their spas are closed; Coastal-path walking, sea swimming and garden yoga is limited to whatever a private teacher will travel for. | Portofino bathing is the sea and the saltwater hotel pools cut into the rock, plus the coves of Paraggi a short walk away. Sea bathing is for the hardy only; heated pools are mostly drained. | Very limited — plan a rest week, not a treatment week. | Lowest of the year; the least open around you. |
| February | Still closed. The coast is beautiful, empty and largely shuttered; a good month for walking and reading, a poor one for programmes. | Portofino bathing is the sea and the saltwater hotel pools cut into the rock, plus the coves of Paraggi a short walk away. Almost nothing open. | Minimal. A visiting therapist at the house is the realistic option. | Lowest. |
| March | The first reopenings. Coastal-path walking, sea swimming and garden yoga restarts at the end of the month as the hotels come back; the coastal paths are at their greenest. | Portofino bathing is the sea and the saltwater hotel pools cut into the rock, plus the coves of Paraggi a short walk away. Pools begin heating in the last weeks of March. | Improving but partial. Confirm what is open before fixing dates. | Low. |
| April | Season opens. Coastal-path walking, sea swimming and garden yoga moves outside; walking, sea air and garden practice with nobody around. | Portofino bathing is the sea and the saltwater hotel pools cut into the rock, plus the coves of Paraggi a short walk away. Heated pools are open; the sea is still cold. | Good availability; book 2–4 days ahead. Off-peak treatment pricing. | Low–moderate. |
| May | One of the two best months. Coastal-path walking, sea swimming and garden yoga in warm, clear weather before the summer crowds — the connoisseur's choice. | Portofino bathing is the sea and the saltwater hotel pools cut into the rock, plus the coves of Paraggi a short walk away. Sea swimming becomes pleasant late in the month. | Very good; 3–5 days ahead is enough, including for visiting practitioners. | Moderate — excellent value for the weather. |
| June | Full season. Coastal-path walking, sea swimming and garden yoga runs daily; boats, gardens and long light. Busy but not yet at capacity. | Portofino bathing is the sea and the saltwater hotel pools cut into the rock, plus the coves of Paraggi a short walk away. Sea at its most inviting without August heat. | Filling; book a week ahead for the best therapists. | Moderate–high. |
| July | Peak. The coast is full, restaurants need booking and Coastal-path walking, sea swimming and garden yoga runs early in the day to beat the heat. | Portofino bathing is the sea and the saltwater hotel pools cut into the rock, plus the coves of Paraggi a short walk away. Crowded midday; dawn and evening swims are the answer. | Heavy demand; 2 weeks ahead for the practitioners you want. | High — villas near capacity. |
| August | The busiest weeks of the year, and the hottest. Practice moves to dawn; the middle of the day belongs to shade and water. | Portofino bathing is the sea and the saltwater hotel pools cut into the rock, plus the coves of Paraggi a short walk away. At its most crowded — private boat or house pool is the calm option. | Booked out. Reserve 3 weeks ahead or accept what's left. | Peak — the most expensive month. |
| September | The other best month. Coastal-path walking, sea swimming and garden yoga in warm water and thinning crowds — a serious retreat week with the season still fully running. | Portofino bathing is the sea and the saltwater hotel pools cut into the rock, plus the coves of Paraggi a short walk away. The sea is at its warmest of the year and the beaches empty through the month. | Availability returns; 4–5 days ahead is comfortable. | Moderate–high, falling through the month. |
| October | A calm, generous month. Coastal-path walking, sea swimming and garden yoga continues in soft light; hotels begin to close in the last week or two. | Portofino bathing is the sea and the saltwater hotel pools cut into the rock, plus the coves of Paraggi a short walk away. Sea still swimmable early in the month; heated pools open until closing. | Good and inexpensive; walking in works midweek. | Low–moderate. |
| November | Closing. Most of the coast shuts for the winter; the walking stays excellent but organised programmes stop. | Portofino bathing is the sea and the saltwater hotel pools cut into the rock, plus the coves of Paraggi a short walk away. Pools close with the hotels. | Limited to the year-round houses. | Low. |
| December | Closed except for the festive weeks, when a handful of houses and restaurants reopen. Coastal-path walking, sea swimming and garden yoga is private-teacher only. | Portofino bathing is the sea and the saltwater hotel pools cut into the rock, plus the coves of Paraggi a short walk away. Very little open outside Christmas week. | Minimal, with a short festive-week exception. | Low, with a festive-week spike. |
Calendar guidance is editorial, assembled from official tourism data, seasonal opening patterns and connected partner inventory in September 2026 — not a quotation. Rate character is an indicative planning note; every house is priced live by the partner holding your dates.
There is no thermal water in Portofino. The bathing tradition here is marine: saltwater pools set into the rock, the sheltered cove at Paraggi and the Ligurian sea itself, warmest in September.
The peninsula's hotel pools are cut into the rock and filled with seawater — open from around April to October with the hotels, closed through the winter.
The bay at Paraggi is the swimmable beach; the path over the headland to Santa Margherita and the walk to San Fruttuoso are the daily practice for most guests.
May and September are the two months to aim for: warm water, open facilities and a harbour you can actually move through.
