Bali wellness calendar: retreats, hot springs and spa, month by month
The month you go changes everything about a Bali retreat — which teachers are in residence, whether the hot springs at Mount Batur are crowded at noon, and whether a therapist is bookable the day before or three weeks ahead. This is the twelve-month view: retreat programmes, hot-spring and thermal-bath openings, and spa availability for each month, with a built-in itinerary builder below.
The twelve months
Retreat programmes, hot-spring conditions, spa availability and villa rate character for each month of the Bali wellness year.
| Month | Retreats | Hot springs & thermal baths | Spa availability | Villa rates |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | Green-season yoga intensives in Ubud run at lower rates; silent retreats have space. Nyepi prep begins in some ashrams. | Mount Batur's Toya Devasya hot springs are at their warmest against cool mornings — a dawn soak before the climb is ideal. | Therapists wide open; book the day before. Spa resorts discount 15–25% off peak. | Low — the cheapest villas of the year. |
| February | The emptiest month; the best teachers have space. Detox and juice programmes run privately without waiting lists. | Banjar Hot Springs in the north are quiet; combine with a Lovina dolphin trip. Angseri hot spring is uncrowded. | Full availability; walking-in is possible outside weekends. Lowest treatment prices of the year. | Lowest — negotiate weekly stays. |
| March | Nyepi (day of silence) closes the island for 24h — the deepest retreat day anywhere. Book a villa that includes the silence. | Hot springs stay warm through the transition; Toya Devasya is busy the week around Nyepi — book ahead. | Good availability except the Nyepi week itself, when everything on the island closes. | Low, with a small Nyepi-week bump. |
| April | Dry season opens; outdoor yoga pavilions and breathwork move outside. Ubud studios restart full schedules. | Morning soaks at Batur are crisp and clear as the dry air arrives; the north road is in good condition. | Availability good; therapists filling for the May shoulder — book 3–5 days ahead. | Moderate — the shoulder begins. |
| May | The sweet spot: teacher-led intensives, sound healing and meditation run in full without the July crowds. | Batur hot springs are at their clearest; pair with a sunrise hike. Banjar is pleasant in the dry heat. | Good availability; peak therapists still bookable a week ahead. | Moderate — best value-for-quality month. |
| June | High-season programmes begin: structured 7–10 day retreats, yoga trainings and breathwork intensives. Book teachers 6 weeks ahead. | Toya Devasya gets busy at weekends; go at dawn. The Batur climb is at its most reliable. | Therapists filling; book 7–10 days ahead for the best visiting practitioners. | Moderate–high. |
| July | Peak: every studio at capacity, retreat leaders from Australia and Europe in residence. Book teachers 3 months ahead. | Hot springs are crowded midday; dawn soaks essential. Banjar is busy with domestic visitors. | Peak demand; the best therapists are booked weeks ahead. Resort spas fully scheduled. | High — villas near capacity. |
| August | Busiest month: intensives, teacher trainings and silent retreats all running. The connoisseur's month if you can get in. | Toya Devasya at its most visited — go before 7am. Cool nights make the hot springs feel best. | Everything booked out; reserve 2–3 weeks ahead. Resort spas fully committed. | Peak — the most expensive month. |
| September | Crowds thin but full programmes still run; the connoisseur's month for a private retreat with the best weather. | Batur hot springs clear again; dawn soaks are quiet. The north road is dry and easy. | Availability returns; book 5–7 days ahead for top therapists. | Moderate–high — the last good-weather value. |
| October | First rains arrive; indoor practice resumes. A good month for a quieter, lower-cost intensive in Ubud. | Hot springs are warm and welcome as evenings cool with the rain. Toya Devasya is uncrowded. | Good availability; off-peak pricing returns. | Moderate — shoulder rates. |
| November | Green season returns; the best value for a long private retreat. Studios run reduced schedules but private teachers are available. | Banjar and Angseri hot springs are quiet and warm against the rain. Batur mornings often clear. | Wide open; walking-in works outside weekends. | Low — before the festive spike. |
| December | Festive weeks sell out by mid-December; the first half is quiet and cheap, the second half is peak. Book early for Christmas. | Hot springs busy with domestic visitors in the festive weeks; book a private slot at Toya Devasya. | Open early December, fully booked 20 Dec–5 Jan. Reserve festive-week treatments a month ahead. | Low until the 18th, then peak. |

Hot springs and thermal baths in Bali
Bali does not have Japanese-style geothermal onsens. What it has is volcanic hot springs — warm mineral water from the same geology that built Mount Batur and Mount Agung — and they are one of the island's quieter wellness assets. The three worth knowing:
Toya Devasya, Mount Batur
Warm lakeside pools on the shore of Lake Batur, in the volcanic caldera. The classic pairing is a sunrise volcano climb followed by a soak. Open year-round; go at dawn in July and August to avoid crowds. Day-trip distance from Ubud.
Banjar Hot Springs, north Bali
Stone-set thermal pools in the hills above Lovina, in the cooler north. Pairs with a dolphin trip or a quiet north-coast stay. Warm, not hot; pleasant in the dry heat and uncrowded outside domestic holidays.
Angseri Hot Spring, Tabanan
A smaller, less-visited spring in the foothills of Mount Batukaru, surrounded by rice terraces. The quietest of the three; best in the green season when the terraces are at their greenest.
A handful of villa resorts also offer Japanese-inspired thermal-bath facilities on site — useful if you want the soak without the drive — but the island's own thermal tradition is the hot spring, not the onsen. If a true onsen experience is what you're after, our Japan onsen retreat guide covers the real thing.

Bali wellness calendar: questions
- Does Bali have onsens or hot springs?
- Bali has natural volcanic hot springs rather than Japanese-style geothermal onsens. The best-known are Toya Devasya on Mount Batur (a warm lakeside pool, often paired with a sunrise volcano climb) and Banjar Hot Springs in the north near Lovina. Some villa resorts also offer Japanese-inspired thermal-bath facilities, but the island's own thermal bathing tradition is the hot spring, not the onsen.
- When is the best month for a Bali wellness retreat?
- May, June and September. All three sit in the dry season with reliable mornings, moderate crowds and rates below the July–August peak. September in particular is the connoisseur's month — full retreat schedules still running, but the busiest visitors have gone home.
- When are Bali's hot springs open?
- Year-round. Toya Devasya at Mount Batur and Banjar Hot Springs near Lovina operate daily. The best experience is a dawn soak in the dry months (April–October) when the air is cool and the water feels warmest; go early to avoid crowds in July and August.
- How far ahead should I book a therapist in Bali?
- In the green season (November–March) you can often book the day before. In May, June and September, book 5–7 days ahead. In July and August, the best visiting practitioners are booked 2–3 weeks ahead; resort spas are fully scheduled. For the festive weeks (20 December–5 January), reserve treatments a month ahead.
- Can I combine a Bali wellness retreat with a hot spring visit?
- Yes — the common pairing is a Ubud-based retreat for the practice, then a night or two near Mount Batur for the Toya Devasya hot springs and a sunrise volcano climb. Banjar Hot Springs in the north pairs with a Lovina stay. Both are day-trip distance from the retreat valleys if you prefer not to move house.
