The Best Time for a Bali Wellness Retreat, Month by Month
Dry season, wet season and the two shoulders — when Ubud, the Bukit and the east are at their best, what villas cost in each month and how far ahead to book.
The short answer
Bali has two seasons and two good shoulders. The dry season runs roughly April to October; the wet season runs November to March and is not the washout people imagine — rain arrives in heavy afternoon bursts and leaves the mornings clear, which is precisely when a retreat schedule puts you on the mat anyway.
May, June and September are the sweet spot: dry, quieter than the July–August peak, and cheaper. February and November are the value months, with rain, low rates and empty ridges. Christmas and New Year price like Europe.

| May | Dry, warm, low humidity | Moderate | Moderate | The Bukit and Ubud — best month overall |

Planning the stay
Programme length
Five nights is the minimum for a structured retreat, ten to fourteen if you want a detox or a teacher-led course to do anything lasting. Villas discount weekly stays; clinics price per programme.
Area by intent
Ubud and the Sayan ridge for practice and clinics, the Bukit for surf and sun-and-silence, Canggu for the modern gym-and-café version, Sidemen and the east for genuine quiet.
Therapists and chefs
Budget $70–$180 a day for a private chef and $60–$120 per treatment for a visiting therapist, on top of the villa. Both need booking a week ahead in peak season.
Nyepi
Bali's day of silence in March closes the airport and confines everyone to their property for 24 hours. For a retreat it is a gift — but check the date before you plan flights.
Frequently asked questions
- When is the best time for a Bali wellness retreat?
- May, June and September. All three sit in the dry season but outside the July–August peak, so you get reliable mornings, comfortable humidity, quieter studios and rates below high season.
- Is the wet season a bad time for a retreat?
- No. November to March brings heavy afternoon rain and clear mornings, which fits a retreat schedule well. February in particular is the cheapest and emptiest month of the year, and the island is at its greenest.
- How far ahead should I book?
- Four months for most of the year, nine for August and for the Christmas–New Year weeks, when the best villas and the good therapists both disappear first.
- How long should a Bali retreat be?
- Five nights minimum, ten to fourteen for a real programme. Factor in a recovery day at each end — the flight is long and most people waste the first morning.
Editorial note & limitations
Nightly rates are indicative for a whole-house booking or a ryokan room with a private bath, and move with the calendar. Hotels, ryokan, spa hotels and other rentals shown on the listings pages are searched live through our booking partners; nothing here is a sponsored placement.
