St Barths runs on a small-island economy where everyone knows everyone and the visiting population is the economy. Visitors should still secure belongings and check current official advice. Crime and road conditions vary; do not assume any destination is risk-free.
What does come up is the terrain. The island is steep, the roads are narrow with hairpins and drops, and the rental Mini Moke or small car everyone uses takes a day of acclimatisation. Drive slowly, especially at night and in rain. For travel to Gustaf III airport, check the airline’s current arrangements and the available boat alternatives. Hurricane season is the honest risk: the island is inside the Caribbean hurricane belt and Irma in 2017 hit hard. The season peaks August to October.
