UK advice (checked 3 October 2026) reports violent crime and armed robberies, sometimes fatal, in residential and tourist areas of New Providence and Grand Bahama. Harbour Island is three miles long, reached by a short boat ride from North Eleuthera, and moves at golf-cart speed.
The practical risks are the water and the road. The Atlantic side — the famous pink sand beach — has rip currents on windy days and no lifeguards; swim on the calmer harbour side when the surf is up. Golf carts are the local transport and account for most visitor injuries: drive slowly, especially at night on unlit lanes, and never after drinking.
Hurricane season runs June to November with a September peak. The island is exposed and services can be interrupted for days after a storm. Travel insurance with weather cover and a flexible rate are the sensible hedges in those months.
