The mountains are the risk. Off-piste terrain around Glacier 3000 and the Videmanette carries avalanche danger, and conditions change within hours. Ski with a guide beyond the marked runs, check the SLF avalanche bulletin daily, and carry transceiver, shovel and probe if you leave the boundary.
Winter roads over the Col du Pillon and towards Saanenmöser are well maintained but demand winter tyres and unhurried driving. Summer brings thunderstorms that build over the ridges by early afternoon — hike early.

- Is it safe to travel to Gstaad?
- Generally, yes. Gstaad is a quiet resort village. Take ordinary precautions with belongings and plan around mountain conditions.
- Is off-piste skiing safe in Gstaad?
- Only with a guide and the right equipment. The terrain above the resort is genuine avalanche country. Check the national SLF bulletin daily and treat a low rating as a reason for care, not confidence.
- Do I need winter tyres to drive in Gstaad?
- In practice, yes. Swiss law requires vehicles to be suitably equipped for conditions and insurers treat summer tyres in snow as negligence. Hire cars booked for winter in Switzerland come fitted; confirm when you book.
- Is Gstaad safe for solo travellers?
- Very. The village is compact, the train link from Montreux and Zweisimmen is reliable and well used, and walking alone at night is unremarkable.
- Is the tap water safe to drink?
- Generally, yes — Swiss tap water is excellent, including the village fountains marked as drinking water.
