What a Costa Smeralda villa costs

The Costa Smeralda was planned from nothing in the 1960s, and it still behaves like a private club: granite villas in walled gardens, a marina full of large boats in August, and a season that runs eight weeks hot and empties by October.

Bands below are indicative for five- to eight-bedroom villas with a pool, exclusive of staffing, boats and cars.

Which bay to take

  • Romazzino and Capriccioli

The classic villa addresses: white sand below, short drive to Porto Cervo, and the calmest water for young families.

  • Cala di Volpe and Pevero

Golf, the bay's famous hotel and the largest estates on the coast. Best if boats and dinners out drive the week.

  • Porto Cervo village and the marina

Walk to the Piazzetta, the shops and the yacht club. Busiest and loudest in August.

  • Baja Sardinia and Cannigione

Ten minutes north, noticeably cheaper, with the Maddalena archipelago boats leaving from Palau nearby.

  • August is a fourteen-night market on the best houses; seven nights is easier in June and September.
  • A boat day to La Maddalena is the highlight of the week — book the boat when you book the house.
  • Ask whether a chef and boat crew are arranged by the villa where offered, and what they cost.
  • Olbia flights fill early for August Saturdays; book flights first.
  • Restaurants in Porto Cervo need reserving days ahead in peak weeks.
