What a Mykonos villa costs
Mykonos — the 'island of the winds', as the Greek National Tourism Organisation calls it, and 'synonymous with cosmopolitanism and luxurious holidays' — has a large luxury villa market and a wide price spread: the same bedroom count can be priced very differently depending on the view, the pool and the drive to a beach club. August is typically the island's most expensive month.

Delos, the island next door
Delos is a UNESCO World Heritage site. UNESCO describes the small, rocky island in the centre of the Aegean as “the most sacred of all islands” in ancient Greek culture, the legendary birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, with an Apollonian sanctuary established at least since the 9th century BC.
After 167 BC it became a free port and a cosmopolitan trading centre, with merchants’ houses decorated with frescoes and mosaic floors. UNESCO notes that excavations began in 1872 and are still in progress, and that the whole island is an archaeological site, together with the neighbouring islands of Rheneia and the Greater and Lesser Rematiaris.
Practically, the Ministry of Culture's visitor page lists boats from Mykonos Old Port taking about 30–40 minutes and a €20 entrance fee; opening hours change with the season, so confirm both with the Ephorate before you plan the day.
Which coast to take
Agios Lazaros and Psarou
The prestige address: sunset views over Delos, the island's best-known beach clubs below, a short drive from Chora. The highest rates.
Kalafatis and Agia Anna (south-east)
Sheltered water, watersports and quieter days. The right side for families and for windy weeks.
Ftelia and the north
Wild and windswept; kite-surfing weather and the emptiest beaches on the island.
Chora and Tourlos
Walk into town for dinner and back. Best for groups who want no drivers and no parking problem.
- The meltemi — the northerly Etesian wind, a main characteristic of July and August according to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service — can flatten a north-facing terrace; take a south-facing one if you want lunch outside.
- Beach clubs need reserving days ahead in August, and so do the good tables in Chora.
- Confirm the drive to Chora in minutes; the island's roads are slow in peak season.
- A driver is worth more than a second hire car on Mykonos.
- Delos lies close by: boats from Mykonos Old Port take about 30–40 minutes, the site charges a €20 entrance fee and hours change with the season — confirm before you plan the day.
