Paris through the year

Paris is an all-year city, which is a different thing from a city where every month is equal. The two windows that reliably deliver long light, open terraces and a city still run by Parisians are May into June, and September into the first half of October.

August is the month most misunderstood. The city empties of Parisians and a portion of the good kitchens close with them, but apartments loosen, the museums are calm in the mornings and the quays are given over to the Seine. If you want the beautiful shell of Paris rather than its working life, August is an honest bargain.

The booking calendar

Demand in Paris is driven less by weather than by a handful of fixed weeks. Book against those first and the rest of the year is forgiving.

  • May, June, September and early October apartments: six to nine months ahead for anything with an outdoor terrace.
  • Fashion weeks (late February, late September) and the June and October art fairs: nine months ahead, or accept the second choice of address.
  • The festive fortnight: nine to twelve months, and expect the year's highest rate.
  • February and late November: four to six weeks is usually enough, and the rate rewards you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest month to visit Paris?
February, with late November close behind. Both sit outside school holidays and outside the festive fortnight, and a private apartment that asks USD 2,400 in June will often take USD 900 in February.
Is August a bad time to visit Paris?
No, but it is a different city. Many family-run restaurants and some boutiques close for two or three weeks, the city is warm and humid, and the crowds are visitors rather than Parisians. In exchange you get quiet mornings in the museums and softer rates on apartments.
When is Paris at its most beautiful?
Mid-May into June for blossom and long evenings; late September into October for golden light on the stone and the plane trees turning along the quays.
How far ahead should I book a private apartment in Paris?
Six to nine months for the May–June and September–October peaks, nine to twelve for the festive fortnight, and four to six weeks in the winter shoulder.
