London through the year
London's year is set by its season rather than its climate. From the Chelsea Flower Show in late May to Wimbledon in early July, the city is at its fullest, its lightest and its most expensive; the parks are usable until nine at night and every good table is taken.
The second window is September into mid-October, when the theatres relaunch, Frieze fills the first half of October and the light turns gold over the parks. February is the honest bargain: dark, wet, half the price, and the only time of year when the museums and the best restaurants are genuinely easy.
Month by month
| Month | Weather | What the month is like | Indicative rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 2–8°C, dark and damp | Post-festive quiet; sales, and easy restaurant tables | USD 700 – 1,600 |
| February | 2–9°C, cold, occasional clear spells | The year's lowest demand outside half-term week | USD 700 – 1,500 |
| March | 4–12°C, showery, lengthening days | Parks wake up; rugby weekends fill the hotels | USD 800 – 2,000 |
| April | 6–15°C, blossom and squalls | Easter and the marathon; the first terrace weekends | USD 900 – 2,400 |
| May | 9–18°C, the loveliest month | Chelsea Flower Show; the season opens | USD 1,200 – 3,200 |
| June | 12–21°C, long light to 9.30pm | Peak season: Ascot, the tennis build-up, garden parties | USD 1,400 – 3,800 |
| July | 14–23°C, warm, occasionally sticky | Wimbledon fortnight, then schools break and the city thins | USD 1,400 – 4,000 |
| August | 14–23°C, humid | Londoners leave; Notting Hill Carnival, softer rates | USD 1,000 – 2,600 |
| September | 11–20°C, warm and settled | The connoisseur's month: working city, open tables | USD 1,200 – 3,200 |
| October | 8–16°C, soft, grey-gold | Frieze in the first fortnight; then a calm, cheaper half | USD 1,000 – 3,000 |
| November | 5–11°C, wet and dark | Lowest demand before the lights go up on Bond Street | USD 700 – 1,800 |
| December | 3–8°C, cold | Early December is quiet; the festive fortnight doubles | USD 800 – 6,000 |
The booking calendar
Demand in London is driven less by weather than by a handful of fixed weeks. Book against those first and the rest of the year is forgiving.
- Wimbledon fortnight, Chelsea Flower Show and Ascot: nine to twelve months for anything in SW1, SW3 or SW7.
- Frieze week in October and the festive fortnight: nine months, and expect the year's stiffest rates.
- May to early July and September: five to seven months for a house with a garden or roof terrace.
- February and early November: four to six weeks is plenty, and the rate halves.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the best month to visit London?
- Late May into June. The light runs to half past nine, the parks and garden squares are at their best, and the season — Chelsea, Ascot, the pre-Wimbledon weeks — is in full swing before the school holidays arrive.
- What is the cheapest time to visit London?
- February, with the first half of November close behind. A Belgravia or Notting Hill house that asks USD 3,000 in June will often take USD 1,200 in February.
- Is August a good time to be in London?
- It is an easy time. Londoners leave, the traffic thins, theatre and museum tickets open up and rates soften. The trade-off is humidity, building works and a city running at half staff.
- How far ahead should I book a private house in London?
- Nine to twelve months for Wimbledon, Chelsea, Frieze and the festive fortnight; five to seven months for the May–July and September peaks; four to six weeks in the winter shoulder.
