Edinburgh through the year

Edinburgh's year has one immovable object in it: August, when the Fringe, the International Festival and the Tattoo run together and the city's population roughly doubles. Everything about the month — rates, availability, restaurant tables, taxis — follows from that.

The rest of the year is far gentler than visitors expect. June gives you daylight until close to eleven at night; September gives you the city back, warm stone, and the Highlands three hours up the road with the heather still out.

The booking calendar

Demand in Edinburgh is driven less by weather than by a handful of fixed weeks. Book against those first and the rest of the year is forgiving.

  • August festival townhouses: ten to twelve months ahead. Good New Town houses are taken the previous autumn.
  • Hogmanay (29 December to 2 January): nine to twelve months, with minimum stays.
  • May, June and September: three to four months.
  • February, March and November: two to three weeks, at the year's lowest rates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Edinburgh?
June for the long daylight and the driest weather, or September for settled air, autumn light and a city that has its festival month behind it.
Should I visit Edinburgh during the Festival?
Only if the Festival is the reason you are coming. August is extraordinary and exhausting: thousands of shows, full streets, tripled accommodation rates and restaurants booked weeks out. For the city itself, come in June or September.
When is Edinburgh cheapest?
February and November. Both are dark and wet, both are half the summer rate, and both suit a townhouse with a fire and a short walk to dinner.
How many hours of daylight does Edinburgh get in June?
About seventeen and a half, with usable light until nearly eleven at night — one of the real arguments for a northern summer.
