Barcelona through the year

Barcelona is a city you can use outdoors for nine months of the year, which is the whole argument for it. The sea is swimmable from June to late October, the terraces run from March, and even February gives you lunch in the sun more often than not.

The two things to plan around are the August heat, when the city is hot, full and at its least gracious, and the congress weeks — the Mobile World Congress at the end of February above all — when every good address is taken.

The booking calendar

Demand in Barcelona is driven less by weather than by a handful of fixed weeks. Book against those first and the rest of the year is forgiving.

  • Mobile World Congress (late February) and La Mercè (late September): nine months ahead.
  • May, June and September apartments with a terrace or pool: five to six months.
  • July and August: four to five months — plenty of stock, but air conditioning and shade are what sell out.
  • November to February: three to four weeks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Barcelona?
May and September. Both give you warm days, swimmable sea in September, evenings outdoors and none of the August heat or the peak-summer crowd.
Can you swim in the sea in Barcelona in October?
Yes, until mid-month in most years. The sea holds about 22°C into early October, warmer than it is in June.
Is Barcelona too hot in August?
It is the hardest month: highs around 30°C, warm nights, high humidity and the most visitors. If August is fixed, take a place with air conditioning and outdoor space, and treat the middle of the day as indoor time.
When is Barcelona cheapest?
November and January, outside the festive fortnight. Rates fall to roughly half the September peak.
