Dubai's villa season is the inverse of the Mediterranean. Four bands carry the year. The festive fortnight and the spring shoulder are the two you plan around; the summer months are the only time a Palm villa trades below its winter weekday rate.

A Dubai villa rate typically includes a villa manager, daily housekeeping, pool and garden maintenance and utilities. Chefs, drivers, nannies, security and boat charters are almost always billed separately, and alcohol is not supplied with the villa.

Dubai's best malls, and how to shop them properly

Shopping is a season in Dubai, not an errand. The Dubai Mall, at the foot of the Burj Khalifa, is the anchor: Fashion Avenue for the European villas, Level Shoe District for footwear, the aquarium and the fountain terraces for the hour before dinner. Mall of the Emirates is the calmer alternative on the Al Barsha side, with Ski Dubai attached - a genuinely useful two hours with children in July. Dubai Hills Mall serves the villa communities inland and is the easiest for a quick run without valet queues, and Nakheel Mall sits at the centre of Palm Jumeirah for guests staying on the fronds.

For the older city, the Gold Souk and Spice Souk in Deira and the covered lanes of Souk Madinat Jumeirah give you the trading version of Dubai. Most flagship boutiques will open by private appointment outside trading hours, and a villa driver waiting in the basement removes the only tiring part of the day.
