The short version

There is no single best month for a country this wide — there is a best month for the version of it you want. Late spring and early autumn are the safe answer: warm cities, open mountain roads, no school holidays and rates below peak. Winter belongs to the ski towns and to Florida and the desert. High summer belongs to the national parks, the Hamptons and the Pacific Northwest, at the highest prices of the year.

Booking windows that actually matter

  • Christmas and New Year in Aspen or Jackson Hole: book by February for the following winter; the best houses rebook with last year's guests.
  • August in the Hamptons: enquire in March, and expect full-season or month-long terms at the top of the market.
  • National park lodges and gateway houses for July and August: six months out, sometimes a year for the best addresses.
  • New York over Thanksgiving and New Year: three to four months for a good apartment or suite.
  • Hurricane-season travel to Florida and the Gulf: book refundable rates and read the change policy before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit the USA?
September and May. Both give warm, stable weather across most of the country, open mountain roads, no school holidays and rates below the July–August and Christmas peaks.
When is the cheapest time to visit the USA?
Late January to early March in the cities and on the coasts, and the mud season of late April to May in the mountain towns. Avoid Thanksgiving, Christmas and the February ski holidays, which are the most expensive weeks of the year.
When is hurricane season in the United States?
The Atlantic season runs 1 June to 30 November, with the real risk concentrated from mid-August to mid-October on the Gulf, Florida and the southeast coast. The Pacific coast, the Rockies and the Northeast are unaffected.
When is ski season in the US Rockies?
Late November to early April, with the best combination of snow and value in January between the holidays. Christmas, New Year and the February school weeks are the peak.

Editorial note & limitations

Rate character describes how prices behave in a month relative to the rest of the year, not a quotation. Houses in the Collection are priced live by the partner holding those dates; hotels and rentals are searched live through our booking partners. Weather and season dates are drawn from official climate and park sources, assembled September 2026.
