The short version
Autumn is the answer: from mid-September to early November the city is warm in the afternoon, cool at night, the cultural season is fully open and the park turns. May and early June are the spring equivalent. Winter after the holidays is cold, quiet and the best value of the year — and the museums and restaurants are at their most civilised.

Booking windows that actually matter
- December and New Year: three to four months for a good apartment, longer for a park-view suite.
- Late September to October: eight to ten weeks; the city is at its busiest for business travel too.
- August and late January: two to three weeks is usually enough, and rates reward the late decision.
- Marathon weekend and fashion weeks compress downtown supply — check the date before you fix yours.
- Ask whether a rate includes the city and occupancy taxes; New York adds meaningfully to the headline figure.

- What is the best month to visit New York?
- October. Warm afternoons, cold-clear evenings, the park in colour and the full cultural season open. September and May are close behind and marginally cheaper.
- When is the cheapest time to visit New York?
- Late January through early March. The weather is cold, but hotel and apartment rates are at their lowest and restaurants are at their most accessible.
- When does Central Park foliage peak?
- Typically the last week of October into the first week of November, a little later than upstate New York and New England.
- Is August a bad time to visit New York?
- It is hot and humid and many of the best restaurants close for part of the month, but the city is also quiet and rates soften. It suits a museum-and-air-conditioning trip rather than a walking one.
