Best Time to Visit the Rockies: A Month-by-Month Calendar
From Colorado to Montana, the mountain year runs on snow, mud, wildflowers and gold. Here is what each month gives you, and the two months to avoid.

The short version
The Rockies have four seasons and two non-seasons. Winter, from Christmas to March, is the main event. Summer, from late June to early September, opens the passes, the trails and the parks. September is the best single month in the range — gold aspens, cold nights, no crowds. The two mud seasons in between are cheap, quiet and largely closed.

Booking windows that actually matter
- Christmas and New Year: February for the following winter, across Aspen, Vail, Big Sky and Jackson.
- July and August with the national parks in the plan: six months, and check park entry reservation systems separately.
- September gold: three months, and it is the best value of the good months.
- Never plan a first day at altitude with a long hike — the range sits between 2,000 m and 3,500 m.
- Mountain weather closes passes without warning in shoulder months; build a spare day into any driving itinerary.

- What is the best month to visit the Rocky Mountains?
- September for hiking, colour and space; February for skiing. July and August are the warmest and busiest, with full park and trail access.
- When is mud season in the Rockies?
- Roughly late April through May after the lifts close, and mid-October to Thanksgiving before they reopen. Many restaurants and hotels shut and rates fall to their lowest.
- When can you hike at altitude in the Rockies?
- Late June to early October for the high trails, though snowfields linger on north faces into July and afternoon thunderstorms are routine in July and August. Start early and be off ridgelines by lunch.
- When is the cheapest time to visit the Rockies?
- May and November — the two mud seasons. The mountains are quiet and much is closed, but the houses that stay open are at their lowest rates of the year.
