Three Thailands, three kinds of retreat

Thailand is not one wellness destination. The north is forest, cool mornings and monastic quiet; the Gulf islands built the world's detox and fasting industry; the Andaman coast has the hospital-grade facilities, the muay thai camps and the flights. Choosing badly is the most common mistake — a week of silent practice does not belong on a beach with a beach club at the end of it.

The private version works the same way it does in Bali. You take a staffed house, and the programme comes to you: a teacher at a standing morning slot, a therapist in the afternoon, a chef cooking to a written brief. Thai therapists are among the best trained anywhere and the cost of bringing them to the house is modest against an equivalent European clinic.

Where to base the week

  • Chiang Mai and the Mae Rim valley — the quiet one

Cool mornings, forest, temples and the country's deepest bench of meditation and massage teachers. Best November to February; hazy and smoky in March and April.

  • Koh Samui — programmes and fasting

The island that made detox a category. Structured multi-day programmes, clinical supervision, and staffed houses on the north and west coasts. Its dry window runs opposite the mainland's.

  • Phuket and Phang Nga — facilities and fitness

Longevity clinics, muay thai and strength camps, international hospitals and direct flights. The easiest place to combine a serious programme with a family holiday.

  • Krabi and Koh Yao — the low-key coast

Limestone water, few crowds, short boat hops. Good second half of a trip after a week of practice inland.

  • Pick one climate per trip — the Gulf and the Andaman have opposite wet seasons.
  • Write the chef brief before arrival: fasting protocol, plant-forward, no alcohol, clinical needs.
  • Hold teachers and therapists as standing daily slots; the best are booked months out.
  • Fasting and detox programmes need seven nights minimum to be worth doing at all.
  • Keep a car and driver rather than scooters — it is the single biggest safety decision you make here.

Booking the stay

Houses in the Collection are priced live by the partner holding those dates, so the rate you see is the rate you book. Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place in Thailand for a wellness retreat?
Chiang Mai and the Mae Rim valley for quiet, meditation and forest mornings; Koh Samui for structured detox and fasting programmes; Phuket for longevity clinics, muay thai and the best hospitals and flights. Match the coast to the month — the Gulf and Andaman have opposite wet seasons.
How much does a Thailand wellness retreat cost?
Indicatively USD 500 to 900 a night for a three-bedroom staffed villa in green season, USD 700 to 1,500 in high season and USD 1,200 to 2,400 over Christmas. Clinical programme fees are separate, typically USD 250 to 900 per person per day.
When is the best time for a wellness trip to Thailand?
November to February on the mainland and the Andaman coast — dry, cooler and clear. Koh Samui runs opposite: its driest, calmest window is roughly February to September, with heavy rain in November and December.
How long should a Thailand retreat be?
Seven nights minimum for a fasting or detox programme, and ten to fourteen if you are combining inland practice with coastal recovery. Under five nights the flying outweighs the rest.
Is Thailand safe for a wellness retreat?
Yes for ordinary travel. Violent crime against visitors is rare; the genuine risks are motorbike accidents by a wide margin, then sea currents, heat, dengue and alcohol-related incidents. Read the Thailand travel safety FAQ for the current advisory position and the honest risk list.

Editorial note & limitations
