The short version
Aspen runs on two peaks. Winter peaks over Christmas, New Year and the February holidays, with the best snow usually arriving after the crowds leave in late January. Summer peaks in July and August around the music festival and the trails. Between them sit two mud seasons — May, and late October into November — when the town half-closes and the houses that stay open are the best value of the year.

Booking windows that actually matter
- Christmas and New Year houses: book by February for the following winter — most rebook with returning guests before they are ever listed.
- February half-term: six to eight months, usually on Saturday-to-Saturday terms.
- Late January: the best snow-to-price week of the season, and often available three months out.
- Aspen gold at the end of September: book by July; it is a short, popular ten days.
- Allow for altitude — Aspen sits at roughly 2,400 m. Plan a gentle first day whatever the month.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best month to ski in Aspen?
- Late January through early March. The base is deep, the days are lengthening, and mid-January and early March avoid the holiday and half-term peaks.
- When do the aspens turn gold?
- Usually the last week of September into the first week of October, depending on elevation. Higher passes turn first.
- What is mud season in Aspen?
- The two between-seasons — roughly all of May and from mid-October to Thanksgiving — when the lifts are closed, many restaurants shut and rates fall to their lowest of the year.
- Is Aspen worth visiting in summer?
- Yes. July and August give wildflowers, high-altitude hiking and the music festival, with warm days and cold nights. It is a genuine second high season, not a quiet one.
