The short answer
August is Bali's most expensive month and one of its best — dry, breezy and thoroughly booked. Everything about it rewards planning nine months out and punishes planning nine weeks out.
Japan is hot and humid in the lowlands, with Obon filling trains and hotels in mid-month, but Hokkaido and the Alps are mild and beautiful. Thailand is in its wettest weeks and is best kept short or skipped.

Peak season: dry, busy, the highest rates of the year and the most demand for the best villas.
Hokkaido
Dry, 25°C, green — the most comfortable place in Asia this month.
Tokyo
Hot but full of fireworks nights; the Obon week empties the city itself.
- Obon falls around 13–16 August in Japan; book six to nine months ahead.
- Bali's August inventory is committed earlier than any other month.
- Hokkaido and Nagano are the reliably comfortable Japanese bases.
- Typhoon risk is at its regional height — keep travel days flexible.
