What a catered chalet in Argentière costs
Argentière is nine kilometres up the valley from Chamonix, and it trades town life for the Grands Montets — the valley's serious lift, and the reason strong skiers take a house here rather than in Chamonix itself. The village is small: a main street, a church, three or four good restaurants and a lift station at the top of it.

Where to take a house in the village
Argentière is compact enough to walk end to end in ten minutes, but where a chalet sits changes the week considerably — the lift queue, the road noise and the sun all move with it.
Above the village, towards the Grands Montets
Ski-access chalets with south-facing terraces and the shortest walk to the lift. The quietest plots and the highest rates.
The village centre and Rue Charlet Straton
Steps from the bakery, the bars and the bus stop. Best for a mixed group that does not want to drive.
Les Chosalets and the Pècles
Traditional farm-conversion chalets across the river, five minutes below the lift, with the valley's best views back to the Aiguille Verte.
Le Tour and Montroc
Three kilometres further up: gentler skiing, families, and the last sunshine in the valley on a spring afternoon.
- Ask whether the chalet is catered, part-catered or self-catered — the difference is roughly USD 250 to 500 a head per week.
- Confirm the walk to the Grands Montets télécabine in ski boots, not in metres on a map.
- The Chamonix bus is free with a lift pass and runs the valley every ten minutes; a second car is rarely needed.
- For the Grands Montets, check whether the top cable car is running — it has been rebuilt in stages.
- Peak weeks are Saturday to Saturday and are placed nine to twelve months ahead.
Argentière in summer
Out of season the village is a climbing and trail base, not a resort: the Argentière glacier walk, the Petit Balcon Nord, the Grands Montets for a lift-served descent, and the Aiguille du Midi twenty minutes down the valley. Rates run roughly a third of a peak ski week and houses release far later — a July chalet can often be arranged inside a month.
Staffing in summer is usually housekeeping only; catered service is a winter arrangement in this valley.

- Indicatively USD 6,000 to 19,000 for a four- to six-bedroom chalet in mid-January, and USD 18,000 to 38,000 over February half-term and the festive weeks. Prime catered chalets reach USD 70,000 at New Year.
- Is Argentière better than Chamonix for skiing?
- For strong skiers, yes — the Grands Montets is the valley's most serious lift and it starts in the village. Chamonix town has more restaurants and nightlife; the free valley bus links the two in fifteen minutes.
- How do you get to Argentière?
- Geneva airport is an hour and fifteen to an hour and a half by road, through the Chamonix valley. Most guests book a private transfer; the village is also on the Mont-Blanc Express rail line from Saint-Gervais.
- When is the cheapest week to rent a chalet in Argentière?
- Mid-January and mid-March, either side of the school holidays. Both weeks run roughly half of February half-term, and March usually gives the better snow depth with longer days.
- Can you rent a chalet in Argentière in summer?
- Yes, and it is the valley's quiet secret: July and August run about a third of a peak ski week, with climbing, the glacier walk and lift-served trails from the village.
