Best Places to Travel in January: A Curated Luxury Guide
January splits cleanly in two — the festive fortnight, then the quieter, better-value weeks that follow. Both reward travellers who know where to look.
The first month of the year is the year's most polarised travel window. Through the first week, the Caribbean, the Alps and the Indian Ocean run at peak rates and full occupancy. From mid-January onwards, the same houses and the same snow become markedly easier to secure. These are the January destinations we recommend most often, chosen with the same discernment we apply to every estate in our collection.
St Barts & the Caribbean: Peak Season, Then the Pause
January is the Caribbean's high season in full. The trade winds are steady, humidity is low, and St Barts, Barbados and Anguilla are at their most sociable through the first fortnight. The insider move is the second half of the month: the festive crowd has flown home, the restaurants take walk-ins again, and villas that were committed a year in advance for New Year come back into availability. The French Alps: The Snow Settles In
By January the Alpine base has built properly — Courchevel, Val d'Isère, Zermatt and St Moritz are at their most reliable for snow depth, and the pistes are quieter than the Christmas and February half-term bookends. Mid-January is the single best value window of the winter for the finest chalets: full staff, full snow, without the festive premium.
Niseko & Hakuba, Japan: Deep Powder Season
January is the heart of the Japanese powder season, when Hokkaido's Niseko and Nagano's Hakuba receive their heaviest, driest snowfall of the year. The luxury here is specific: a private chalet with a ski-in ski-out position, an onsen at the end of the day, and kaiseki dinners rather than resort buffets. Book early — the best houses are committed the previous spring.
The Maldives: The Dry Season at Its Peak
The northeast monsoon holds through January, which means the Indian Ocean's most settled seas, its best underwater visibility, and near-constant sunshine. It is the Maldives' most expensive month and, weather-wise, its most dependable. Atolls farther from Malé stay quieter and reward the extra seaplane leg with emptier beaches and more intimate resorts.
Aspen & the Rockies: The Ski Town in Winter
January is when Aspen settles back into itself after the New Year rush — deep snow across all four mountains, shorter lift lines, and restaurant tables that no longer require a month's notice. Cape Town & the Winelands: Southern Hemisphere Summer
January is high summer at the Cape — long, dry, wind-scoured days, the Atlantic beaches at their liveliest, and the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek estates mid-season. A private villa above Camps Bay or Clifton gives you the coastline; an hour inland, the winelands give you the harvest. It is one of the few places that pairs city, beach, mountain and vineyard within a single week.
Patagonia & the Southern Andes: High Summer in the Far South
January delivers Patagonia's longest daylight hours and its most walkable conditions — Torres del Paine and the Fitz Roy massif at their most accessible. It is also the busiest month, so the private estancia approach matters more than ever: ranch hospitality, guided departures ahead of the trailhead rush, and dinner back in front of a fire.
Los Cabos, Mexico: Dry Skies and Grey Whales
The Baja dry season runs through January with clear skies, mild evenings and the Pacific grey whale migration in full progress off the peninsula.
