Almost nothing that rents in Aspen as a luxury cabin is a cabin. These are timber-and-glass lodges, restored West End Victorians and gated Starwood estates with ski rooms, spa levels and heated motor courts — and the difference between a good week and an expensive one is usually the neighbourhood, not the house.

Which side of Aspen to take

The valley prices by view and by walking distance to the Aspen Mountain gondola. These are the six areas our Aspen inventory sits in, and what each one buys you.

  • West End

    Restored Victorians four blocks from the Aspen Institute and a short walk to the gondola. The choice when you want the town, the music festival and no car.

  • Red Mountain

    Cedar-and-glass lodges looking straight down the valley to Aspen Mountain. The alpenglow view is the premium you are paying, and it holds in every season.

  • Starwood

    Gated acreage above the valley with panoramic Elk Range views, guest houses and full staffing. The top of the Aspen market, and the most private.

  • Snowmass

    Ski-in ski-out residences on the Assay Hill side, twenty to twenty-five minutes from Aspen town, at a materially lower rate for the same slope access.

  • Woody Creek & Castle Creek

    Farmhouses and log-and-glass lodges ten to fifteen minutes out, with river frontage, wood-fired hot tubs and the quiet that town does not offer.

  • Smuggler & Maroon Creek

    Contemporary houses a ten-minute walk from the core, and larger estates on the golf corridor with indoor pools and staff quarters.

Cabin, chalet or lodge?

In Colorado the three words describe the same kind of house: timber-built, six to ten bedrooms, a ski room, a spa level and a fire worth sitting at. The Alps call it a chalet, Aspen calls it a cabin or a lodge, and the listing wording rarely tells you which is bigger.

Judge on three things instead: how far you are from the lift, whether a chef and housekeeper are included or contracted separately, and whether the boot room and heated garage take your group's gear. Everything else is decoration.

Booking windows and seasons

Christmas, New Year and Presidents' Week are the hardest dates in Aspen — the best houses rebook with last year's guests, and what remains is usually gone by February for the following winter. January, March and April are comfortably bookable three to six months ahead.

Summer is the overlooked half of the year. The same houses rent far below winter rates between June and September, through the music festival, the hiking season and the aspens turning gold in the last week of September. The month-by-month Aspen calendar sets out each season in full.

How much does a luxury cabin or chalet in Aspen cost?
Across the houses on this page, indicative nightly rates run from roughly $2,000 for a four-bedroom house outside town to $15,500 for a gated Starwood estate on fourteen acres. Red Mountain and West End houses mostly sit between $5,000 and $10,000. Christmas, New Year and Presidents' Week are quoted separately by the partner holding those dates.
Which Aspen houses are ski-in ski-out?
Several are, including the Snowline chalet and the Snowmass residence on the Assay Hill side. Others — the West End Victorians in particular — are a short walk or shuttle from the Aspen Mountain gondola. Each listing states its own access, and a ski shuttle is on call at most of the larger houses.
When should I book an Aspen chalet?
Christmas and New Year houses are largely committed by February for the following winter, as the best properties rebook with last year's guests. January, March and April are comfortably bookable three to six months ahead. Summer, including the music festival season, is often available at short notice and at a fraction of winter rates.
Are chefs and housekeeping included?
It varies by house. The larger Red Mountain, Starwood and Maroon Creek estates are staffed with a chef, house manager and driver, particularly through the festive weeks. Smaller houses include daily housekeeping and arrange a chef separately. The listing for each house states which applies.
Do I need a car in Aspen?
In the West End, no — the town core and the gondola are walkable. On Red Mountain, in Starwood, Woody Creek and Castle Creek a car is assumed, and four-wheel drive is sensible in winter. Several houses run a driver or ski shuttle instead.
