What a Cortina chalet costs
Cortina is a town before it is a ski resort: a corso of shops, a bell tower, and hotels that have taken the same families for generations. Rates run below the Swiss and French equivalents, and the skiing is spread across three separate mountains reached by bus, car or the Freccia nel Cielo cable car.

Where to take the week
Cortina centre and Alverà
Walk the Corso Italia to dinner and take the cable car to Tofana. The easiest base without a driver.
Pocol and Lacedel
Above the town towards Falzarego, with sun all afternoon and quick access to the Tofana and Cinque Torri lifts.
Zuel and the valley floor
By the Olympic runs and the Socrepes nursery slopes; the practical family base and the best value.
Fiames and Cadin
Quiet, wooded and five to ten minutes north, with cross-country tracks from the door.
