Venice through the year
Venice has two clocks: the tourist clock, which runs from Easter to October and empties the city of anything resembling ordinary life, and the Venetian clock, which runs in the cold months when the fog sits on the water and the city belongs to the people who live in it.
If you can only travel in summer, stay on the water and reorganise the day: out by seven, back in by eleven, out again at six. If you can choose, come in late October or in January.

- When does acqua alta happen in Venice?
- Mainly in autumn and winter, when high tides and weather coincide. The MOSE barriers reduce many high-water events, but residual flooding and forecasts vary; check the city's current tide bulletins before travelling.
- Is there a fee to enter Venice?
- The city's 2026 day-visitor access-fee trial ended on 27 July 2026; future years require a new city decision. Check the official Venice access-fee portal before travel, and check accommodation taxes separately if staying overnight.
- Is Venice too crowded in summer?
- In the corridor between the railway station, Rialto and San Marco, yes. Cannaregio, Castello, the Giudecca and Dorsoduro stay manageable even in July if you move early and late.
