Two seasons and two silences. Snow from December to April, meadows and lakes from June to September, and the empty months in between when a chalet costs a quarter of what it does at Christmas.

The short version
Winter is the Alps' loud season: mid-December to mid-April, peaking hardest over Christmas, New Year and the February school holidays across Europe. Late January and the first half of March are the sweet spots — the same snow, a third less money, and lift queues you can live with. Summer is the quiet one: from late June the high valleys are green, the lakes are swimmable and the same chalets let for a fraction of their winter rate.
Altitude matters more than the month. Resorts above roughly 1,800 m — Val d'Isère, Zermatt, Val Thorens, Obergurgl — hold snow when lower villages cannot.

Booking windows that actually matter
- Christmas and New Year chalets in Courchevel, Zermatt, St Moritz or Gstaad: book by February for the following winter.
- February half-term: six to eight months, on Saturday-to-Saturday or Sunday-to-Sunday terms.
- Late January and mid-March: the best snow-to-price weeks, often available three months out.
- Summer in the lakes — Como, Annecy, Lucerne — books like a Mediterranean summer: four to six months for August.
- Confirm whether a staffed winter rate includes the chef, driver and lift passes; in the Alps it usually includes the first two and not the third.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best month to ski in the Alps?
- Late January to early March. The base is deepest, the days are getting longer, and the weeks either side of the February school holidays avoid the highest rates and the longest lift queues.
- When does the Alpine ski season start and end?
- Mid-December to mid-April in most high resorts, with glacier skiing from late November and into May at altitude. Lower villages open later and close earlier.
- Are the Alps worth visiting in summer?
- Yes, and it is the great value of the region. From late June to mid-September the trails, lakes and passes are open, the air is cool and the same chalets let for a fraction of their winter rate.
- When is the cheapest time to visit the Alps?
- May, and late October into November. The lifts are shut and much of each resort closes, but the places that stay open are at their lowest rates of the year.
