The Oceania destination guide.

Two things shape every trip to this part of the world: the seasons run opposite to the northern hemisphere, and the distances are larger than a map suggests. Sydney to Auckland is a three-hour flight; Auckland to Bora Bora is another five. Plan around those two facts and the region is straightforward. We hold villas in French Polynesia; elsewhere this guide is editorial, and we say so plainly.

Travel tips

The seasons are reversed

December to February is high summer in Australia and New Zealand and the wetter, cyclone-prone season in the tropical Pacific. June to August is winter in the south — ski season in New Zealand's Southern Alps — and the dry, calm season across Fiji and French Polynesia.

Allow for the distances

For a Sydney–Cairns or Auckland–Queenstown itinerary, compare current airline schedules and onward connections. Two bases are an editorial planning option, not a verified flight-duration or time-loss formula.

Island transfers run in daylight

Reaching an overwater villa in French Polynesia means an international flight into Papeete, then a domestic hop and often a boat. Those legs do not run after dark, so build in a night in Tahiti rather than assuming a same-day connection.

Self-drive is genuinely better in New Zealand

The South Island rewards a car more than a transfer: the distances between Queenstown, Wanaka and the west coast are the trip. Drive on the left, allow longer than the map suggests on mountain roads, and book campervans and rentals early for January.

Sun protection is not optional

Check the current UV index for your destination before travelling, and pack high-factor, reef-safe sun cream, a hat and shade for the middle of the day.

December to February

Local culture and etiquette

Informality is the norm, not carelessness

Australia and New Zealand are first-name, low-ceremony places. Very few restaurants require a jacket. That informality does not extend to lateness or to talking over people — punctuality and letting others finish are both taken seriously.

Tipping is not expected

Service is included in the price in Australia and New Zealand, and staff are paid a proper wage. Rounding up or leaving ten per cent for exceptional service is welcome, but nobody is waiting for it, and there is no obligation.

Respect Indigenous land and custom

Some sites are sacred and closed to climbing or photography — Uluru is the best-known example. In New Zealand, Māori protocol applies at marae and some natural sites. Follow posted guidance and local guides rather than deciding for yourself.

Sunday and island time are real

Across much of the Pacific, Sunday is for church and family, and shops and restaurants close. Island schedules run loosely by design. Plan arrivals, transfers and shopping around both rather than against them.
