The short version

Los Angeles has two useful seasons: a dry warm one from May to October, and a mild green one from November to April with a few weeks of real rain. The catch is the coast, where a marine layer greys over the mornings from late May into early July — the famous June gloom. Autumn is the answer: September and October are warm, clear from breakfast, and the ocean is at its most swimmable.

Booking windows that actually matter

  • September and October houses in Malibu and the canyons: three months out; the best pool houses go early.
  • Awards season (January to early March) compresses Beverly Hills and West Hollywood — book four months ahead or stay on the Westside.
  • Coachella and festival weekends in April pull inventory toward the desert; check dates before fixing yours.
  • Always confirm parking and driver access at hill houses — the roads, not the rates, are the difficulty here.
  • Autumn Santa Ana winds raise wildfire risk; take a refundable rate if your dates sit in late October or November.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Los Angeles?
September or October. Clear mornings without the marine layer, hot afternoons, the warmest ocean of the year and fewer summer crowds.
What is June gloom in Los Angeles?
A marine layer that covers the coast in cloud most mornings from late May into early July. It usually burns off by early afternoon, and inland neighbourhoods stay sunny throughout.
When is the cheapest time to visit Los Angeles?
Late January into March, outside awards weeks, and early December. Rates are at their lowest and the city is green from winter rain.
When is wildfire season in Los Angeles?
Risk is highest from late summer through autumn, especially during dry Santa Ana wind events in October and November. Check current conditions and take a refundable rate for those dates.

Editorial note & limitations

Rate character describes how prices behave in a month relative to the rest of the year, not a quotation. Houses in the Collection are priced live by the partner holding those dates; hotels and rentals are searched live through our booking partners. Weather and season dates are drawn from official climate and park sources, assembled September 2026.
